The New Year is the time we usually make resolutions. We set goals with good intentions to realize them yet, often times, we fall short in achieving them. Studies have shown that January is resolution month that begins fast and fades as compelling personal and professional goals get lost somewhere between daily distractions and personal excuses.

What I’ve learned through my experience in advising—coaching professionals and companies across the spectrum of experiences and successes—is that a special quality separates people who actually follow through with their January resolutions from everyone who doesn’t. This same quality separates all top-performing professionals, business owners, leaders, and highly effective individuals from everyone else.

Commitment

Commitment, not decision. A commitment means to do whatever—ethically and legally—is necessary until the desired result becomes a reality. A commitment requires a decision multiplied by focused action until the goal/resolution is accomplished. Or until significant progress is achieved.
