Moving Beyond the Competition

Andrew Carnegie said, “Successful people are the ones who go the extra mile.” The essence of his quote, I think, lies in a key principle of achievement: enhanced value.

What is enhanced value? That depends on your specific type of work. In simple terms, it’s under-promising and over-delivering. It means going above and beyond what is expected of you. It is consistently making the entire experience better for your clients, associates and the people you serve.

Today, more than ever, we live in a fast-paced world that’s constantly evolving on multiple levels. When we embrace an enhanced value mindset and approach in our professional roles and responsibilities, we have a stronger competitive advantage. We stand out in the eyes, minds and perhaps hearts of our clients, prospects, associates and employers.

Once we clearly understand what is expected of us and communicate what we are committed to delivering, it’s imperative that we embrace the enhanced value principle.

Being and becoming more valuable in our professional roles and responsibilities are certainly things that we can control in this ever-changing business world.

Here are a few examples of how we put this practice into action at One Degree Principle:

– Clients who participate in our business and leadership development programs are invited to attend workshops and live events free of charge.

– The highly professional and personable women who answer my business phone line and provide administrative support, greet my clients and guests by name and make sure that the atmosphere remains comfortable while the guests wait in the lobby area.

– Coaching clients who work for businesses and corporations also adopt this mindset by stepping up to lead new projects and offer help to others.

There are countless other ways you can interpret and implement this important principle for your own business.

What is your understanding of enhanced value? What are some ways you can put it into practice in your professional world?

It’s worth giving this consideration. We become more valuable and move beyond our competition when we go the extra mile.
