It’s common, for all of us, to lose focus and perspective when things are going well. After all, there’s only one thing more difficult than becoming a “champion” and it’s to remain one.
Complacency has a tendency to sneak up uninvited when we achieve important goals and milestones. If not recognized, it may hinder chances of experiencing long-term sustainable success. For example, a record-breaking quarter in sales may cause a business owner to loosen efforts in attracting new clients. Or, a business receiving a series of recognitions for exceptional client services may become stagnant by overlooking the importance of continued improvement in client service.
Complacency is a reason why large businesses, corporations, and even industries that experience success, in the long run, may face major challenges because they resisted embracing change through innovation. Complacency may also cause corporate team members to do just enough or just what is expected of them.
The moment that we accomplish an important goal or attain a milestone we need to pause and celebrate. We deserve to do this even if our celebration is symbolic. Soon after, however, we need to dedicate time for reflection and clarity.
This is when we aim for our next milestone; we become more curious about what may be next; and we get inspired and excited about all the possibilities ahead. We can ask ourselves: What are the next important goals to aim for? What is our plan to realize them? Are we committed, first and foremost to ourselves, to make our new goals a reality?
When we experience success, we need to become aware of the possible trap of complacency and to avoid it at all costs. Like a wise person once said: “Even when things are going well, stay grounded, humble, and hungry.”
